16th century French poet Rémy Bellevue wrote his own Greek myth involving Dionysus and a maiden named Amethystos. Dionysus’ advances were denied and he chased her down until she prayed to the gods for protection. Artemis then transmuted her into a white stone to protect her chastity. Stricken with grief Dionysus poured his wine over the stone turning it into a deep purple and therefore creating the first amethyst.
